About This
- Mansoa alliacea, or Garlic Vine is a quick-growing, semi-tropical true vine that will provide quick cover on a fence, trellis, or support. The common name, Garlic Vine, stems from the garlic odor of the leaves if crushed. The odor is not noticed otherwise.
- This easy to grow sub-tropical vine produces show-stopping profuse hanging boughs of multi-toned purple trumpet flowers in the spring and fall in tropical to semi-tropical climates.
- Care: The best permanent planting location for Garlic Vine is in full sun. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil. Provide supplemental irrigation until well established and during dry spells. Prune after flowering to control size. Feed a good quality bloom boosting slow release fertilizer annually in Spring.
- Indoor Growing: This tropical vine grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures, so not well suited for the average indoor growing space.
- Climate: Garlic Vine is a semi-tropical plant recommended for growing in Zones 8B, 8, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all Zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and does not consider other variables. Considered root hardy in Zone 8B and 9A when well established.
