Red Spider Lily Bulbs, Lycoris Radiata, 10 Pack, Texas Grown Heirloom
$75.98
About This
- Texas-grown red spider lily bulbs (Lycoris radiata), raised locally in Texas and suited to southern United States climates. Plant them in your garden and they'll send up coral-red flowers on 1–2 foot stalks in late summer and early fall, each bloom bursting open like a firework.
- The red spider lily grows on its own schedule. Its foliage comes up in winter to take in nutrients, then goes dormant for the summer. When the rains come in late summer or early fall, the flower stalks pop out of the ground and bloom within a few days.
- Also known as the hurricane lily or surprise lily, it gets its names from the coral-red softball-size blooms that appear suddenly after heavy fall rains that bring cooler temperatures. The long stamens look like spider legs.
- The foliage needs 6 or more hours of winter sun every day to soak up energy for next year's flowers. If a freeze comes while the foliage is up, consider covering it so your bulbs can keep taking in nutrients.
- Plant the bulbs at a depth of about 2–3 times the height of the bulb. You can plant them any time of year, but avoid planting during a hard freeze.
- A hardy perennial for zones 7–10 that is drought and heat resistant, often lasting decades. The bulbs multiply readily with new offsets, so your 10 bulbs will turn into many over the years.
- Red spider lily bulbs often don't bloom the first year. They usually need 6–12 months in the ground to settle in, and after that they bloom every year. You are planting for the future.
